Follow on Facebook too
You can no follow on Facebook as well as Twitter, Tumblr and Pinterest. It’s the new term which Facebook is using for its Subscribe feature which was introduced in September last year. As on Twitter, you can follow someone without them following back, so this is quite different from the Facebook friends relationship where both parties receive each other’s content in their News Feed.
Following someone on Facebook allows you to receive their Public updates in your News Feed. The change in terminology makes the concept easier to understand and should encourage more following as the Subscribe feature never really took off. At the launch of Subscribe, Facebook choose to go with its own term but the change to Follow as used by Twitter and Pinterest makes more sense.
Anyone can obtain followers although it’s particularly suitable for high profile people and those with a strong personal brand eg photographers, actors, singer, sportsmen and sportswomen, authors and journalists. With the feature and name change Facebook is competing directly for those people who join Twitter to obtain news and updates from celebrities and high profile people. They are hoping such people will use the Follow feature rather than join Twitter.
From a business point of view obtaining followers is a great way to increase your audience and raise your profile. To do this you need to enable the Follow button on your profile.
- Select the cog symbol on the top-right of your screen
- Select Account Settings
- Click Followers on the left hand side menu
- Check the box next to Allow Followers
A Follow button will now be displayed on your Profile to the right of your Add Friend button and the number of your Followers is displayed in a box below.
