Foursquare reaches out to non-members

I’ve long been an advocate of Foursquare and its benefits for companies, particularly bricks and mortar businesses. Growth in active new members in the UK has been much slower than the US but the Foursquare team in New York and London are regularly adding new features that add value and increase awareness.

As of last week they introduced a new Share button/icon on apps and special web pages to show off venues to people that don’t have the Foursquare app on their mobile. Having tested over the weekend, it’s a shame that the new pages son’t appear on the iPad - users are directed to the old style pages.

On IoS you’ll see a new blue share button and on Android a share icon. If the recipient doesn’t have the Foursquare app installed they are taken to a shiny new web page which contains map, photos, tips and rating for the venue.

Selecting the Open App button on the top right of the page prompts you to sign up for Foursquare.

This new feature should help raise awareness of the benefits of Foursquare amongst non-members and encourage more users to join. Both are a good thing for venues who are promoting themselves through the Foursquare app.

New from Facebook: Like Your Favourite Pages and Pages Feed

Facebook have introduced a couple of new features on the News Feed that will help businesses acquire Likes for their Pages and encourage fans to view their content.

Like Your Favourite Pages displays the names and profile pics of 192 Pages you might be interested in makes it easy for you to Like them with a single click. You can also sort by categories including Music and Film and significantly for businesses; Brands & products and Companies & organisations.

Facebook considers Pages you’ve visited, check-ins, your friends and apps/websites you use that are connected with Facebook and makes appropriate suggestions.

You can access Like Your Favourite Pages on the left hand side of your News Feed via the Like Pages link at the bottom of the PAGES menu.

The new features are in the process of  being rolled out so if you can’t see them yet you will do soon.

You can also access the new Pages Feed on the same menu. You can add Pages Feed to your Favourites menu but oddly you can’t do this for Like Pages.

By selecting the Pages Feed you can can focus entirely on content from Pages you’ve  Liked. Good for consumers who won’t miss news, offers and competitions from businesses they’re interested in.

The new feature has been introduced in the wake of businesses being concerned that Fans were missing out on their updates in their News Feeds, where Facebook only displays content that it considers relevant using an algorithm called EdgeRank.

Do you think these new features from Facebook will help visibility of your Page and its content? Let me know what you think in the comments below.
